Ok, I know I know, your probabbly thinking, “Why not just use Google?”. I want my own search engine. Right now I have a massive server that has plenty of storage, MySQL database software, phpMyadmin, and I do not have an world wide web spider. So what I am asking for is a free World wide web Spider that goes out and simply grabs the, URL, and Site Description, and keywords. Then swiftly adds them to my MySQL database.

Hi,

looking at your post it seems that you are in a first stage of your development. If you want to begin developing your own search engine, then (just for development and testing) you will not need a lot of space. you can also use any language you like – perl, java, C – the language is not as important as a good algorithm. If you have good algoriths for indicing and ranking, you can use most languages to implement them.

start with indicing a small amount of webpages in the beginning – maybe 50 or 100. That way, you can use a normal Computer or a cheap offer of a web hoster. if that works (and this will take a lot of development time!), then you can begin thinking about how to get more space and bandwidth.

btw, i think the apache project has a open source webcrawler in java, and there are some web crawlers written in perl. maybe you can use them.

Sure, you could spend all that money making a site like google, but you wont make any money back. Why would people use your site instead of google or yahoo? they wont even know your site exists.

There is superior investments out there surely, this doesnt seem worth the effort, at best, you wont see a good profit for years.

I think you are misinterpreting how a search engine generally works. It is not that job of the website to do the work. I’d state there are two main aspects of a search engine. 1) a web crawler that explores the web and indexes the word/phrases in a database. 2) Parsing the input of a users string from the website and searching that database (that should be organized probably in a tree fashion or else you are searching in linear fashion giving O(n) time).

My recommendation is that you begin with the first web searcher – google for swish and swish-e. They have the original source code for building the index, and they have scripts for doing the searches. Take it from there so you have a solid understanding of the foundation of what you are trying to do.
