I am currently building a website for my on the web business and I have a book about SEO that speaks about how to optimize. One important detail that it doesn’t make clear is whether or not the site should be optimized before it goes up on the world wide web or after. Does the sequence even matter?

HOW CAN I BEST SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZE MY FINANCIAL BLOG’S CATEGORIES AND TAGS FOR STOCKS?

Currently, my blogs categories and tags are a mess. I have a “stock research” category with a subcategory called “Companies” and then several company names under that. Now that WordPress has tags built in I have started referencing stock tickers such as MSFT as a tag. I have also added Microsoft Inc as a tag and then blended in the term “intrinsic value” on the same post. All this looks really messy and probably is not really search engine optimized. I need to make some changes.
For stocks, should I create a category called Stocks and two subcategories called “by company name” and “by stock ticker”? This could be rather hard to maintain.
Or should I just add subcategories under the Stocks category for the whole company name and ticker, such as “Microsoft Inc (MSFT)”.
Or should I just reference tickers as tags? Should I also add the full company name as a tag as well?
Categories vs. tags? Tickers vs. full company names vs. company name and ticker? I do not know what to do.

I’m a graphic and web designer, so I do comprehend a tiny bit about search engine optimization, but I have just never gotten it to work very well for me. I would like to begin a blog, and I’d like it to be search able to the public – would it be superior to make my own website, or to use something like blogger? How would I optimize it?
