Question by autumn:
password protect code for a web page or hide from search engines?
so what if i want a private page,
is there a way to hide it from search engines?
and if there is no way then what is a simple code that would password protect a web page?

like this one only a way to get to the page i want.

test it here

http://www.draac.com/htmltester.html

now if i have to learn javascript to make it happen then i will but i just need to know if this is possible.

and what are the possibilities of someone breaking into this and how would they do it? is there a way to prevent it?

its ok if you cannot answer all of my q’s
thanx in advance!

——————————————

Answer by Adrian
Well, in theory, most legitimate bots are supposed to read the robots.txt file in your root folder, and skip any files (or folders) listed there.

I do it a bit more complicated. Besides using the robots.txt, I have a LInux-based router looking at actual content, so if I see any packet going by with the folder or file name I want hidden (and it is hidden), I automatically add the source IP to my blacklist and ban that IP in my frewall…they can read nothing anymore… Since whatever bot it was is acting “bad” , I do not want it ever back again. Of course, I permit my own IP or a selected few IPs through first, so at least I can get to it.

Sorry that does not answer your question direct. It’s just I thought I’d explain my method of banning unwanted bots (the ones that dis-obey the robots.txt). It’s simple to set a trap directory that has nothing in it, and putting it into the robots.txt, then trapping it.

——————————————

Question by memyselfsoujichanandcutiedan:
my site has been published for almost a year, but why it still cannot be found on search engines?
my site for the animation character Wolfram von Bielefeld in the anime Kyo Kara Maou has been published for almost a year, but why it still cannot be found on search engines, or just has place at the last search page? I always try to make the site fresh by updating at least 2 times a month, but it still cannot reach the average of 15 guests per day and cannot be displayed on huge search engines such as MSN and Google even if I type the site title on the searching keyword? (I had made the meta tag keyword and description for the index page’s HTML script, but it did not work either) How should I deal with this prob? This is the site URL: http://golden-jade-azure-dream.asuran.net

I recently installed this program called facemoods. On google chrome you had the privilege to type in whatever in the link bar and it’d direct to you to a google search. Since I have installed FaceMoods it has it’s own search engine which I do not like. I uninstalled FaceMoods and tried editing the search engines. But when I click on facemoods.com I am unable to remove it! HELP

Question by Pastor Chad from JesusFreak.com:
Will Google and other search engines pick up content on an automatically forwarded page?
I just tested out the following script on a page on my site and it worked really well as far as forwarding goes. But what I am wondering is, until I get links up on the page I ultimately want an old page forwarded to, will search engines pick up content on pages with a forwarding script, as if the forwarded page is still current? The page I am wanting to have forwarded to a new page has been getting a lot of traffic, and I just want some way to direct visitors to the new page while still having search engines pick up the content on the old page that the visitors are searching for to start with. Here is the script I am using (Yahoo is just an example):

You’ve got a point, Vincent–I do tend to ask things that should be obvious to most people. But since I have noticed forwarding scripts on other pages, I am curious to know anyway how this would work from a programming standpoint.

——————————————

Answer by Vincent
Why dont you just delete the content on the home page, replace it with a easy text that states this web site has been moved, with a link to the new site…..keep both sites up for a while until those search engines get your new site cached, probably about a week to a month to get your new page ranked high enough to remove the old site….

Forwarding traffic to the new site will still get you hits on any search engine, the will see visitors to the site, its not necessarily how did they get there…..

——————————————

Question by Sean:
Why do my computer’s search engines not work?
When I search through Google for anything, then click on the link for my search result I want to look at, it does not take me to the link I want. It either:

1) Takes me to another search engine, usually an obscure one, and re-searches for my query and grants me to select from new search results.
2) Or it takes me to an advertisement pertaining the my search query.

I ran “Spybot – Search & Destroy” which found 21 problems and fixed them. The problem is, now when I run a search and click on a link, often instead of taking me to my link, it takes me to a dead page. The webaddress will be correct in the address bar, but the actual page itself will not be displayed. If I click on the address bar and press ‘enter’ it will take me to the site I want. This tell me that there is still something wrong with my computer, trying to take me to another site, but not working. Please help!!

Answer by CKRT SQRL
I hate when that happens. Sorry but I have no remedy ( except maybe put some gas in your engine). (cksq)
