YOU don’t build links to your website. Other people can link to your site if you allow them to, but they are the ones who have to decide they want to be linked to your site.

The good news is that building links for your website isn’t difficult to do. Link building is essential to the success of any good search engine optimization or internet marketing campaign. There’s a good resource for information located here:
http://www.portland-marketing.com/internet-marketing/how-to-build-links-for-your-website/
It’s pretty comprehensive and since you haven’t provided any details to the type of website you’re building, it should be generic enough to cover what you need.

Hey Maria,
There are several ways to build links to your website. I’m including a link to my blog because I wrote a post exactly on this topic but here are a few simple places to start:
Social Bookmarking – If you’re not familiar with Social Bookmarking, check out sites like Digg.com, Stumbleupon.com & Diigo.com. Those are a few of the major bookmarking sites. Make sure the sites cover topics similar to yours. You can find out by checking the navigation bar. Set-up a profile and bookmark your own page. “Follow” people that bookmark similar content, if they bookmark your content as well you get a link.
Article Submission – Writing articles and submitting them to Article Submission sites like Ezinearticles.com, Articlesbase.com & Submityourarticle.com is another great way to build links. The way you get links from these are entering links within the article that direct people to your website.
Create quality content! People will link to your website naturally if your content is relevant (& well written) to what they are looking for.
You can ask for links…doesn’t usually work out but sometimes. If you create a link to another website and email the webmaster asking them to reciprocate the link and let them know how the link is beneficial to them is a good idea.
Forums & Blog Posting – Some forums and blogs allow for “do-follow” links. If you don’t know what they are, a basic definition is it’s a link that counts. There are “no-follow” links that do not count toward the inbound links to your website and thus have no weight. Anyway, if you can find blogs or forums that are of similar content to your website and make relevant posts, these can be great links.
