Heinz is right – it’s called programming.
Specifically sql, server side scripting, html, and whatever programms they use to maintain the site. Not to mention server configuration/maintance, load balancing, etc…

Basically a search engine is made of 2 parts 1) to score around the web looking for site blindly and indexing them under certain categories 2) making a simple search to read thru the index and return webpages containing the search string. Google dosent search the net everytime u search, they search the indexed servers
how this is done, some neat indexng algo, scripting languages – php, a version of sql, xtra huge hardware(servers etc)
